Vapon was founded in 1927 by Edward F. Heydt with a single product developed by his father-in-law, Carleton Ellis. Carleton was a notable inventor of his time, whose inventions included fiberglass and margarine. He was one of America’s most prolific inventors, not far behind Thomas Edison with 753 patents, and his contribution to technology earned him a named ship by the US Navy, the SS Carleton Ellis.
